Having witnessed the history of county changes for more than 1,600 years, Nantou Ancient Town in Shenzhen has created a cultural and creative district that embraces diverse cultures based on history. Mario came here and became an apprentice to Ke Yuanda, a young puppet actor from Shenzhen Puppet Art Theater, and started a Shenzhen version of "The Adventures of Pinocchio".
The lifelike puppets, crafted from a simple piece of wood, are brought to life by the chisel of a traditional puppet master, giving them a soul. They transform into figures like Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhong Kui, and a little monk... It's as if they have crossed time, with the puppet performers gently bringing them to life with every lift and movement.
Whether it’s a string puppet or a stick puppet, making them follow the actor’s instructions is not that easy. As Ke Yuanda puts it, achieving "unity between the person and the puppet" means the puppet is ready to perform. This time, Mario’s puppet learning journey was evaluated by Ke Yuanda as achieving 60-70% effectiveness—a perfect conclusion.
